WOMEN OF THE WORLD UNITE!
Sponsored by UNITE HERE
To be delivered to: The Ultimate Fighting Championship, UFC Sponsors and Partners, and the FOX Network
We demand the UFC adopt, enforce, and make publicly available a code of conduct that holds UFC fighters and company representatives accountable for remarks or actions against women.
This International Women's Day, we are taking a stand against the denigration of women that has been tolerated by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) for far too long. We call on the world's largest promoter of professional cage fighting events to put an end to the misogyny and sexism that pervades the "sport."
The UFC broadcasts fights in over 149 countries and territories to nearly a billion homes worldwide. Disturbingly, UFC fighters and company representatives have joked about rape or used foul and abusive language that is particularly demeaning to women.1 Most recently, the Fox Network televised a live UFC event in January which included a main card fighter who posted a "how to" rape video on the internet last year in which he advises viewers to buy zip ties and chloroform to help his target "relax."2 Another UFC fighter Forrest Griffin tweeted the following comments: "Man that bitch is so tough she uses a wooden dildo because she likes the splinters!" and "Condoms are for pussies! …" These are only a few examples of misogyny that the UFC has tolerated from its fighters.
Professional sports organizations have adopted and enforced meaningful codes that subject violators to serious sanctions for bad conduct. We demand the UFC adopt, enforce, and make publicly available a code of conduct that holds UFC fighters and company representatives accountable for actions or remarks against women. The UFC, its sponsors, and Fox should have a zero tolerance policy against rape jokes, misogyny, sexism, and any other forms of debasement of women.
